Creative Effects has built hardscapes in Lakewood since 2017, and it pairs naturally with fencing. A retaining wall often becomes the base for a fence; a patio needs a gate to the yard; a driveway may want a gate at the street. Doing the hardscape and the fence together keeps the grades, drainage and lines working as one plan.
We build for homes and commercial properties across the Lakewood and Tacoma area, with the same attention to drainage and footings that fencing in our wet soil demands.

What We Build
- Block and stone retaining walls with proper drainage and compacted backfill.
- Paver and concrete patios and walkways graded to shed our rain.
- Fire pits, seating walls and outdoor-living features.
- Driveways and pathways, with gate openings planned in.
Retaining Walls and Fences Together
On sloped Pierce County lots, a retaining wall and a fence are often one project. We build the wall to carry its load with drainage behind it, and plan how the fence posts tie in on top — core-drilled, bracketed or set back on footings — so the two work as a system.
Retaining Walls Built to Carry a Fence
A retaining wall holds back soil, and on our sloped Pierce County lots that is half the yard’s structure. The part people skip is drainage: without a gravel backfill and a drain line behind it, water pressure will bow or fail a wall over time. We build block and stone walls with compacted backfill and proper drainage, and where a fence is going on top, we plan the post anchors — core-drilled, bracketed or set back on their own footings — from the start so the fence does not overload the wall.
Patios and Walkways That Shed Our Rain
Flat hardscape in a wet climate lives or dies on grading and base prep. A patio that was not pitched to drain becomes a puddle, and pavers set on a thin base heave and settle. We build paver and concrete patios, walkways and garden paths on a compacted base, graded to move water away from the house, so they stay flat and usable through the wet months.
Fire Pits and Outdoor Living
The hardscape features that make a yard somewhere you actually spend time — fire pits, seating walls, built-in planters — are a natural add-on to a fence or patio project. Doing them together means one crew, one plan for grades and drainage, and a finished outdoor space rather than a series of disconnected projects.
Driveways and Garden Paths
Hard surfaces take you from the street to the door, and in our climate they want the same base and drainage attention as a patio. We install driveways and garden pathways in pavers or concrete on a compacted base, pitched to shed water, and we plan the gate and fence openings into the layout so the path leads somewhere rather than dead-ending at a post. A paver drive also lets a single settled section be lifted and reset instead of jackhammering a whole slab.
Commercial Hardscape
We have built for commercial clients around Lakewood and Tacoma since 2017, and the same principles scale up: solid base prep, real drainage, and walls engineered for the load. Whether it is a commercial walkway, a parking-area wall or site hardscape to go with a fence, we scope it with the long-term maintenance in mind.
Hardscaping and Fencing as One Project
The real advantage of using us for hardscape is that we also build the fence. A retaining wall that will carry a fence gets its post anchors planned before the first block is laid; a patio gets a gate to the yard in the right spot; a driveway gets its gate opening sized from the start. Doing the wall, the patio and the fence as one project means one crew, one plan for grades and drainage, and a finished yard instead of three contractors blaming each other for the parts that do not line up.
Pavers or Poured Concrete?
Both work in our climate when the base is done right, and the choice is about look, repairability and budget. Pavers flex with freeze-thaw and let a single settled unit be lifted and reset, so a tree root or a soft spot is a spot repair rather than a jackhammer job. Poured concrete is seamless and low-maintenance but harder to fix once it cracks or heaves. On a sloped or wet Lakewood lot, the base prep and drainage matter more than which surface you pick — a beautiful patio on a poor base fails either way.

Hardscaping FAQs
- Yes, and on sloped lots it is often one project. We build the wall with proper drainage and plan how the fence posts tie into or sit behind it so the two work as a system rather than fighting each other.
